South Africa struck early with the ball, leaving New Zealand to reel at 26 for 3. The visitors finished the day on 38 for 3, trailing South Africa by 443 runs.

Faf du Plessis's unbeaten 112 helped South Africa to declare their innings on 481 for 8.
